Thoughts from the Chatsworth Primary Hallway

LEADING FOR INQUIRY LEARNING

One of the articles I shared with the teachers this week was a blog piece by Kath Murdoch an inquiry guru from Australia.  Kath talks about what needs to exist for teachers, students and school communities to lead inquiry classrooms. A few of the words from her blog that stand out for me as I think about what inquiry teaching and learning looks like here at Chatsworth are relationships, passion, curiosity, nurturing, collaboration, time.  When I spend time in our classrooms observing lessons or simple when walking through, I see passionate teachers, curious students, nurturing environments, teachers and students collaborating, students and students collaborating and lots of time spent learning rather than working!  I feel proud of our learning community because we are a community who works very hard at being the best for our students.  Kath has a number of nutshell statements about inquiry, all of which are applicable here at Chatsworth.  Read the nutshell statements in her blog, and you too will recognise Chatsworth in many, if not all of them.  This week’s pictures show inquiry in action.

Perspectives from the PYP Coordinator

23 September

Transdisciplinary Learning is our teaching approach at Chatsworth in the Primary School. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme endorses a belief that students learn best when the learning is authentic and transdisciplinary— relevant to the real world—where the learning is not confined within the boundaries of traditional subject areas but is supported and enriched by them (Making the PYP happen: A curriculum framework for international primary education 2009).

Today, Michael Lucchesi, Inquiry Coordinator and Year Six teacher, held an inspiring Parent Cafe about transdisciplinary learning. Parents explored the meaning of transdisciplinary learning and then visited classrooms to see this approach in action. After visiting the classrooms, parents returned to debrief with Mr. Lucchesi about their experiences. See our photos of learning below. Our first box is filled with words from the parent reflections after visiting the classrooms. Thanks you to Ms. Williams, Ms. Tamara, Mr. Snell, Ms. Smyth, Ms. Crosbie and Ms. Dawson for sharing their classrooms.
