Perspectives from the PYP Coordinator

24 February

Often at the end of a unit, students want to share their learning with an audience. According to Edward Graham and many other experts, showcasing student work ‘inspires students to higher achievement.’ At Chatsworth, we are always looking for ways for students to authentically share their learning. Some students blog as they progress through a unit. Others showcase their learning by posting on the ePortfolios. This week we had two classes invite parents in to see the culminating events of the Year Five and Year Two classes.

Our Year Two budding authors were sharing their “All About” books as well as their knowledge of the unit, Where we are in place and time where they studied the central idea of how ‘People’s daily life is connected to the geography and features of where they live.’

The Year Five students also combined their language and unit learning through their Sharing the planet unit where they explored the central idea of how ‘Biodiversity relies on maintaining the interdependent balance of organisms within systems.’ Students provided poetry performances for their audience and displayed the artwork they developed within their unit.

Both of these End of Unit Celebrations were shared with the larger school community and their parents. This authentic audience viewing their performances, showcases how our students are doing amazing things where they are constantly engaged in learning and developing skills.

Perspectives from the PYP Coordinator

17 February

Why is learning important and how to we keep supporting learning that comes from a natural curiosity?

I ask myself this question daily as I work to support teachers and students within our community.  “Inquiry, as the leading pedagogical approach of the PYP, is recognized as allowing students (and teachers) to be actively involved in their own learning and to take responsibility for that learning’. As you look at the photos below think of that concept as we support learning in our community on the playground, in the classrooms, in teacher professional developments and throughout our community.
