Have you ever asked your child about their day and had them tell you, “I did not do anything.” I have experienced that frustration many times. Well recently, I received an article from a friend that gives parents different questions to ask their children that will help the child be more descriptive about what happened in their school day. I wanted to share some of the important gems from this article.
The article, 15 Questions to Replace “How Was School Today” states that “with slight modifications, these questions can be asked at any age.” Check out a few of their ideas:
- Tell me about a moment today when you felt excited about what you were learning.
- Tell me about a moment in class when you felt confused.
- Think about what you learned/did in school today. What’s something you’d like to know more about? What’s a question you have that came from your learning today?
- Were there any moments in your day when you felt proud of yourself?
- Tell me about a conversation you had with a classmate or teacher that you enjoyed?
- What was challenging about your day?
- What do you appreciate about your day?
- What did you learn today?
- Is there a question that you wish I would ask you about your day?
- What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
Remember to only try one or two a day to not overwhelm the child. Try out all of the different questions over time and see which ones elicit the most from your child. Sharing time with our children conversing about their day gives you many insights into their school world and their friendships. These are such important parts of a child’s life.
