Perspectives from the PYP Coordinator

3 February

Often at the beginning of a unit, teachers pose questions or develop opening provocations to support the children connecting the new unit to their prior knowledge.  Applying past knowledge to new situations, students are able to solve new problems and acquire knowledge. Students make connections from previous experiences to their new situations.

Children in these situations use all of their senses to form mental images through what their senses experience. Often you will notice how the students communicate with others their thoughts and feelings. They are able to use accurate and clear language because the provocation is experiential. The students are then able to explain, compare and make connections. The final phase of these learning engagements is to reflect and develop their own questions about where the unit will go next.  This process is referred to as Tuning In and is how all of our units of inquiry begin.
