Thoughts from the Chatsworth Primary Hallways

Gong Xi Fa Cai
Celebrating the national holidays of our host country Singapore gives us the opportunity to learn and appreciate what Singapore offers us, particularly the appreciation and acceptance of the variety of cultures that exists here.

The Lunar Chinese New Year is upon us, and 2017 is the Year of the Rooster.  Our school has been learning more about this celebration this week and preparing for our up and coming Chinese New Year celebrations with the Lion Dance on the 8th February 2017 beginning at 9.30am.  Please feel free to come and join us for the Lion Dance as well as share in our CNY festivities after.

Perspectives from the PYP Coordinator

20 January

One of my favorite parts of my job is presenting the curriculum to our parent community. Today with EiLin Tan, our Mandarin teacher and Single Subjects Coordinator, we presented the single subjects curriculum of: additional languages, French, Mandarin, physical education, music and visual arts.

For each of these subjects, teachers follow the inquiry model exploring their curriculum through central ideas. The elements of the arts are embedded within the subjects of music and visual arts. The elements of music are taught through the strands of listening, improvising, creating and composing, reflecting and responding. The elements of visual arts are taught through exploring, creating, presenting, responding and art appreciation. Through the creative process creating and responding are embedded throughout the curriculum. For physical education, students explore identity, active living and interaction within building a healthy lifestyle. Through the related concepts of belonging, citizenship, community, teamwork, conflict, body control, flexibility, strength and endurance, spatial awareness, autonomy, character, and resilience, students learn ways to take care of themselves. Additional language approaches French and Mandarin in the same way by using central ideas and the related concepts of culture, communication, community, action, connection and comparisons. Within all these classes, students play games, learn songs and rhymes as they acquire new skills.

After learning about the curriculum, parents toured classes and gained a glimpse of the interactive nature of learning happening in the single subjects. Below check out the visits to these classrooms:

At the debrief following the class visits, parents inquired more into the pedagogy of the Primary Years Programme and ask for articles about it. Here are a few links of articles that may interest you:

Keep an eye out in future blogs to find more in the literature.
